The DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System) is a technical standard for the electronic publication which brings together text, audio & images into a single accessible, navigable digital talking book. It is a new file format based on an ANSI NISO standard and the text portions of it are referred to as DTBook, an XML standard coordinated by DAISY Consortium and the Library of Congress’ National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS). The Daisy format includes the benefits of a range of audio features, full text – allowing navigation, as well as search and find features and the ability to add bookmarks and footnotes. A DAISY talking book can be read on a PC with a CD drive and a specific reading program or in a special talking book player.

NIMAS (National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard) is a technical standard used by publishers to produce source files (in XML) that may be used to develop multiple specialized formats (such as Braille, DAISY talking books, large prints or HTML) for students with print disabilities. The NIMAS specification is a subset of the ANSI/NISO Z39.86-2005 standard that is also used as the standard for DAISY 3.0 digital talking books.
